Security Patches

Joomla is one of the most secured CMS out there, but of course, you also have to update your website for the patches. Patches can be easily applied within a minute or two. Here's a 3 step guide on how to update your Joomla CMS

  1.  Go to Joomla.org website and download the latest patch. You can easily find the download link by clicking on the button Joomla download link . As of this moment, the latest build is 1.5.14
  2. In there, you can see the Download other Joomla 1.5.x packages » Link, just click it and download the current build upgrade, you can see the version of your joomla website on the upper right corner of your admin panel. Example, if you're using 1.5.8, then you'll have to download joomla_1.5.8_to_1.5.14-Stable-Patch_Package.zip (assuming that 1.5.14 is the latest)
  3. Unzip and upload every file in the main site using ftp (just overwrite everything), and you're done!
Hope this quick guide helps you make your site secure!

Some of us tend to create url's directly from the link we get from the main website, and SEF is really helpful in making our links much more readable. Though, sometimes, we tend to get the SEF'd url and when we edit the article, we tend to break the link. Here's a quick tip on creating URL's that doesn't need that much maintenance.

  • Before editing or creating an article that have links on it (unless its really an external link), try to disable the SEF for a while
  • Paste or enter the internal url in this format "index.php?article_link_here " (or the internal non sef'd article link)
In that way, even if you change the article title or the other stuffs inside it that will affect the SEF'd url, you wont need to change the link all over again since its the internal content you will be calling (which will be SEF'd automatically too!).

Times have changed and so is the way we do business. Social networks like Multiply, Facebook, MySpace, Stumble Upon, Digg and so on used to work for individuals but now, more and more businesses are now finding their way in these sites.

Various researches say that social networks can do a lot to boost your business. Aside from providing you the means to linkbait, social network sites like Facebook, MySpace and other blog sites help your business create its own community where you can interact with consumers personally. This means that you can form groups and catch the attention of other people who share the same interests as yours. This is niche marketing because you are able to reach out to your target market. Social networks also bring you closer to your target market, allowing you to get to know them better, to interact with them and to identify what they really need or want. Having this type of connection is also good for your employees. It promotes good work-life balance. The online community helps in building an environment of trust that, in turn, develops the collaborative skills of the employees.

These sites help you establish your online presence and allow you to reach out to wider markets. As more people join your network, your business or brand also becomes more popular. These people also help you promote your brand since the members of their own networks will be able to see your profile or group.

Social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit and Delicious have become top marketing tools for businesses. In these sites, users submit and share bookmarks. Businesses may submit links to their websites or to recent posts about their products, services and others. Social bookmarking sites also serve as a recommendation engine because users may repost your links. They may also vote on their favorite links. The links that garner the most number of votes are then listed on the homepage. This is a very good exposure for your business. The inclusion of your links on the homepage means higher chances of people seeing your links and clicking on them.

Twitter is another popular social network that businesses use nowadays. This is one way of keeping the people in your network updated on what is happening to you and what you are doing right now. Twitter provides businesses with so-called viral marketing. It allows you to stay in touch with your target market and can drive traffic to your website. Twitter can be linked to other social networks and blog sites.

Stumble Upon is a great way for users to discover interesting websites, blogs, photos and videos. A user creates an account on the Stumble Upon website and sets the topics that he/she is interested in. The site will then stumble the user to random but relevant sites. What is good about Stumble Upon is it does not make use of pop-up or other forms of ads. It displays your website directly to the user. The user will then rate your website with either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down. The more thumbs-up votes your website gets, the faster it will spread and the more people will be interested to click on it. Stumble Upon can help a lot in your business because it allows you to reach out to people who are interested in you or who match your target criteria. Also, your website is displayed directly so you are assured that it is able to catch the focus and attention of the user.

To summarize the key points, social networks can help your business because it assures you of niche marketing. This means that you are able to capture the attention of your target market. It also allows you to reach out to a wider audience and to interact with consumers on a more personal level. Social networks are also capable of spreading the word faster. Best of all, you can get all of these benefits at no extra cost since signing up and memberships are free of charge.
